Colleen Hoover’s book It Ends With Us has been a consistent best-seller for years, and now its movie adaptation is dominating the box office. Produced by Sony Pictures for $25 million, the film is on track to earn at least $45 million in the United States and Canada, according to box office analysts.

Starring Blake Lively, this romance film is based on Hoover’s most popular book, which was first published in 2016. The novel reappeared on best-seller lists during the pandemic in 2021 and has spent around 140 weeks there since. The book, about a complicated love triangle with themes of domestic violence, sold 8 million copies worldwide, gaining a massive fanbase thanks to TikTok.

Released at a time when there have been few films targeted toward women, It Ends With Us has found tremendous success. This is similar to last summer’s Barbie, which earned $1.4 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing film of the year. Sony capitalized on this opportunity with a powerful social media campaign that featured Blake Lively and included appearances by her husband, Ryan Reynolds, along with support from Taylor Swift. Swift contributed her song “My Tears Ricochet” to the film’s soundtrack and trailer.

On its opening day, the PG-13-rated film earned an impressive $24 million, including $7 million from Thursday previews. Audiences flocked to see Blake Lively play a florist with a troubled past who falls for a charming but abusive neurosurgeon, portrayed by Justin Baldoni, who also directed the film (Wikipedia).
